Debates Society
Goals & Objectives
-
The Debate Society provides students with a dynamic platform to develop their critical thinking, persuasive communication, and collaborative skills through a range of intellectually stimulating experiences.
-
From friendly debate matches with schools such as Whitley Secondary and Montfort Secondary to the Julia Gabriel Debating Workshop, members refine their ability to construct logical arguments, think on their feet, and speak with confidence and clarity.
-
Their participation in the Moot Parliament Programme at Parliament House further deepens their understanding of governance and policymaking, nurturing informed and engaged citizens who appreciate the complexities of public discourse.
-
The Debate Society also proudly represents the school in prestigious competitions such as the Singapore International Schools Debating Championship, Raffles Institution Under-14s Debating Championship, and the National Public Speaking Competition 2025, where students pit their skills against some of the best young orators in the nation.
-
Through these varied opportunities, our debaters grow into articulate, confident, and discerning thinkers ready to engage meaningfully with the world around them.
CCA Achievements
The Debate Society achieved an outstanding result at the Raffles Institution Under-14s Debating Championship 2026, emerging as Champions of the Silver Division. Organised by Raffles Institution, the prestigious tournament brought together talented young debaters from schools across Singapore, providing a platform for participants to engage critically with contemporary issues and develop their public speaking skills.
The championship aimed to cultivate critical thinking, effective communication, collaboration, and adaptability among participants. Through a series of challenging debate rounds, students were required to analyse complex motions, construct persuasive arguments, rebut opposing viewpoints, and respond confidently under pressure. The competition also provided valuable opportunities for students to interact with peers from different schools and broaden their perspectives on a range of social, political, and ethical issues.
Representing the school were members of the Debate Society, who demonstrated remarkable resilience, teamwork, and intellectual rigour throughout the tournament. Their commitment to extensive preparation and continuous improvement enabled them to perform consistently well against strong opposition teams.
One of the highlights of the championship was the highly competitive elimination rounds, where students showcased their ability to think critically and communicate persuasively under time constraints. The team impressed adjudicators with their depth of analysis, clarity of expression, and effective teamwork. Their hard work and determination culminated in a stellar performance in the final round, where they secured the championship title in the Silver Division.
This achievement reflects the students’ dedication to excellence and their strong mastery of debate skills. The success also highlights the Debate Society’s commitment to nurturing confident, articulate, and globally aware communicators who are prepared to engage thoughtfully with the world around them.
