Signature Community Outreach to the Health Science Authority (HSA)

On 17 April 2025, 17 student leaders from Peicai Secondary School visited the Blood Bank at the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) to thank the staff supporting Singapore’s blood donation efforts. The group included 14 Secondary 3 Chairpersons and Vice-Chairpersons, and 3 Secondary 4 students. As a gesture of appreciation, Ya Kun Kaya Toast also sponsored 30 sets of kaya toast and hot beverages for the HSA team.

During the visit, the three student presenters shared their reflections from their School Work Attachment Programme (SWAP) at HSA in November 2024. They spoke about the critical importance of regular blood donation and the role youths can play in promoting awareness of this life-saving act.

After the students’ presentations, Dr Chua expressed his heartfelt appreciation to both the teachers and students who contributed to the event. He also extended his gratitude to the teachers and parent who stepped forward to donate blood. Dr Chua shared that he found it inspiring to hear students speak about their perspectives on blood donation and the importance of saving lives. He remarked that the younger generation has reminded him that the spirit of giving is truly the heartbeat of a thriving community.

The students also expressed heartfelt appreciation to the nurses and professionals at HSA, who are on the frontlines of every blood donation drive — ensuring donor safety, offering comfort to anxious donors, and helping to maintain the vital blood supply hospitals rely on each day.

As a symbolic gesture of hope and appreciation, the students presented a meaningful crane montage in the shape of a heart, made from origami cranes folded during the Start Smart Programme. The remaining cranes were also gifted to the HSA staff as tokens of encouragement and support. To conclude the visit, the students served the staff their kaya toast sets and warm beverages as a sincere expression of thanks.

Adding to the meaningful experience, two teachers — Mr Tan Yi Quan and Mr James Koh — along with a parent, stepped forward to donate blood during the visit, embodying the spirit of generosity and support for this important cause.

This enriching experience not only deepened the students’ understanding of the importance of blood donation but also inspired them to become passionate advocates for this life-saving cause in their communities.

Secondary 1 VIA Activities – 2025

In 2025, our Secondary 1 students were the second cohort to carry out their VIA projects on social causes. Building upon the experiences of their seniors, many had the opportunity to learn directly from Secondary 2 students who shared the same social causes.

As part of a cross-level sharing initiative, each Secondary 1 class was paired with a Secondary 2 class focusing on a similar cause. The Secondary 2 students designed and facilitated interactive games and discussions to help their juniors better understand the issues at hand. This meaningful exchange allowed Secondary 1 students to gain greater awareness and insight into their causes, while also inspiring them to think about how they might take action in the future.

The experience culminated in a level-wide sharing event, where Secondary 1 students hosted booth exhibitions to raise awareness among their peers and apply what they had learned.

Secondary 2: Acting on Social Causes

In Secondary 2, students transition from learning to taking action. Using the knowledge and insights gained in Secondary 1, they collaborate with their classmates to design and implement small-scale projects that address their chosen social causes. These initiatives may take place within the school or extend into the wider community, allowing students to make a tangible impact.

Key Objectives for Secondary 2:

• Take meaningful action through projects that address social causes.

• Collaborate with peers to create impact, either in school or the community.

• Strengthen leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills in real-world settings.

The focus here is on applying learning through action and using creativity to bring about positive change.

Secondary 2 VIA Activities – 2025

In 2025, our Secondary 2 students took meaningful steps to translate understanding into action through a variety of impactful projects.

Within Peicai, one class organised a clothing donation drive, collecting pre-loved clothes from students and staff to promote sustainability and support those in need. Two other classes stepped beyond the school grounds to create impact in the wider community — one visited St Luke’s ElderCare, where students spent the day connecting with seniors, including those with dementia, to promote inclusivity and compassion. Another class partnered with a preschool, designing and conducting engaging, age-appropriate activities to teach young children about environmental sustainability.

Meanwhile, through the cross-level sharing sessions with Secondary 1 students, the Secondary 2s furthered their objective of creating impact within the school community. By preparing interactive activities and games, they deepened their juniors’ understanding of important social causes while strengthening their own sense of purpose and leadership.

Secondary 3: Passing It On and Advocacy

In Secondary 3, students take on an advocacy role, building upon their past experiences. They focus on raising awareness of their social causes by educating others — within the school or in the community. This may involve campaigns, partnerships, or outreach initiatives with external organisations. Students also mentor their juniors, passing on their knowledge and fostering a culture of peer-led leadership.

Key Objectives for Secondary 3:

• Advocate for social causes by raising awareness through campaigns and projects.

• Mentor younger students, passing on knowledge and encouraging participation.

• Enhance communication and advocacy skills, while fostering a sense of responsibility for community improvement.

At this stage, students become ambassadors for their causes, using their voices and actions to inspire others to make a difference.

Secondary 3 VIA Activities – 2025

In 2025, our Secondary 3 students took their advocacy beyond the classroom by collaborating with external organisations and taking tangible action to support their causes.

One class partnered with Food from the Heart, organising a school-wide food donation drive to encourage the Peicai community to support families in need. Others rolled up their sleeves to clean up the beach, contributing to environmental protection efforts. Several classes also partnered with organisations such as the SPCA and St Luke’s ElderCare, where students engaged meaningfully with animals and the elderly through hands-on service and heartfelt interaction.

These experiences allowed our Secondary 3 students to transform their learning into purposeful advocacy — demonstrating compassion, responsibility, and initiative as they inspired others to care about the causes they championed.

Bus Captains are a group of unsung heroes who kept Singapore moving during the pandemic. Despite the dangerous and critical situation caused by the contagious virus, they held firm and continue to fulfill their responsibilities of fetching Singaporeans to work and school. Singapore is able to emerge from the pandemic stronger than before due to their effort, We felt that it is time for Peicains to step up to show our gratitude and thanks to our BUs Captains!

Crane represents peace , love and gratitude. It is our way of showing our gratitude to our bus uncles and aunties! More than 1000 cranes were encased in the installation you see on the right! And did you manage to catch some of the happy faces captured in the photos? A big thank you to the sec 3s and please give yourself a great round of applause for this achievement! YOu made the difference!

The notes contained Wonderful memories of how Bus Captains greeted us every morning with warm smiles! for eg, In times of emergencies, when one student did not have sufficient balance in his ex link card, the bus cap allowed him to continue his journey to school! The notes were presented as a booklet to SBS transit.

Last Friday. 11 of our student leaders together with Prinicpal Mr Michael, Ms Lim and Mr Koh paid a visit to Serangoon Bus Interchange. Our Principal Mr Michael presented the crane installation to Mr Bernard Goh , Head of Operations of SBS transit. Yakun Kaya Toast was very supportive of our effort and sponsored 100 sets of kaya toast and drinks for our Bus Caps. Our gesture of appreciation to the bus caps resonated with Yakun CEO Mr Tanaka. He paid us a surprise visit that day at the interchange (photo bottom right)

As we presented the toast and drinks to the bus captains, we felt heartened that we were able to do our part for the community as students and as part of Peicai Secondary. That really made us feel very proud!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Michael for his support to this project and all our form teachers who guided us in this appreciation project. The art installation would be featured at Serangoon bus interchange Passenger Service Office. We hope more of you can stand up and initiate meaningful projects for our community!

On National day, Peicai invited seniors from Lions Befrienders to join us for our celebrations and to watch our school concert. Selected student leaders also hosted the seniors to a Yakun-sponsored breakfast. This is part of Peicai’s contribution in giving back to the community and spreading some love and joy to the seniors in our community.

Working together, our students embarked on an impactful VIA project in collaboration with CDAC and prepared two lessons to teach primary school students from CDAC how to hand-make a xylophone and panflute using recycled materials.

Throughout this transformative journey, our students honed essential E21CC skills, including effective communication and collaborative teamwork. Their unwavering dedication not only enriched the lives of these young children but also left a lasting, positive impact on the broader community.
