Sec 2 Outdoor Activity Learning Camp

The glistening sun and warm weather welcomed the Secondary 2 cohort of students to the start of their Outdoor Activity Learning Camp. Students have the opportunity during the camp to apply the outdoor competencies learnt during Physical Education lessons to develop a sense of place. They will continue to deepen their outdoor competencies; they learn more complex knowledge and skills during their Secondary 1 Outdoor Education lessons in preparation for extended residential camping.
They will then apply these competencies during this residential camp with their peers where they will plan and undertake a day trip during the camp to connect with outdoor places outside the campsite safely. This culminating event provides opportunities for students to synthesise, apply and make meaningful and safe decisions in authentic situations and tasks set in the outdoors.

When our Sec 2 students first reached the campsite in Camp Christine, they were quickly required to settle down and pitch their tents ready for storing their camp bags and in preparation for rest at night. Thereafter, the introduction by the Camp Chief of Trekkers, Jacintha, covered the whole range of activities that each camper will be going through.

The 10 classes of students then broke up to 3 main syndicate groups, of which 3 classes will go to Sentosa and Labrador Park for their Raft Building and Rafting exercise as well as Land Expedition respectively; and 3 other classes will challenge their team’s camaraderie in Low Elements as well as the BPEC Water Challenge, where they have to activate all their core muscles in order to cross over a body of water through limited tools and ropes.

The last syndicate of 4 classes will undergo a series of team challenges that they will have to solve, alongside making a meal that will replace their lunch / dinner through outdoor cooking.

The programme matrix then rotates to allow every camper to experience all of these exciting activities, and through that, also learn to live life without relying too much on the convenience of mobile phones and sedentary activities.

On the final night of camp, the cohort then came together to celebrate their team achievements with a rousing campfire, opened officially by our Principal, Mr Michael to cap off an excellent camp of bonding, of effective communication and collaboration, and of class spirit.

With this, the cohort successfully completes their first sojourn and looks forward to their next main challenge outdoors: The Secondary 3 MOE-OBS Challenge Programme!
