Discovering Guangzhou: A Journey of Learning, Culture and Friendship
From 27 to 31 October, our students embarked on an enriching Overseas Student Exchange Programme (OSEP) to Guangzhou, China, accompanied by three teachers: Mrs Lee Tey Ai Hoon, Mr Tau Jun Hui and Ms Zhang Chuyi. The China OSEP was more than an exploration of a new city — it was an opportunity for students to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences, embrace diverse perspectives and develop a deeper appreciation of culture, technology and the environment. Through these authentic learning experiences beyond the classroom, students strengthened their E21CC competencies, broadened their perspectives of the world and sensitise them to Singapore and its place in the world.
1. Cross-Cultural Literacy: Understanding Chinese Heritage and Traditions
The journey offered students opportunities to deepen their understanding of Chinese history, cultural identity and heritage.
Nanyue King’s Tomb Museum: Exploring Ancient Beliefs and Traditions

The visit to the Nanyue King’s Tomb Museum provided further insights into ancient Chinese practices and beliefs. Through examining historical artefacts, students gained a better understanding of the Chinese way of life and how ancient Chinese people perceived death and reincarnation, appreciating the values and beliefs that shaped their cultural practices.
Dragon Kiln: Experiencing the Art of Traditional Pottery
The visit to a traditional dragon kiln in Guangdong introduced students to the rich heritage of Chinese pottery and traditional craftsmanship. Learning about the history and techniques of pottery-making, students gained an appreciation of the skill, patience and creativity involved in this traditional art form. Putting their learning into practice, students personalised their own lion heads, drawing inspiration from the traditional Chinese lion dance, a cultural symbol associated with prosperity, strength and good fortune. Through this hands-on experience, students not only explored traditional pottery techniques but also discovered how art and craftsmanship preserve cultural traditions and pass on heritage across generations.
2. Critical, Adaptive and Inventive Thinking: Exploring Technology and the Environment
The journey challenged students to think critically about how technology, innovation and environmental sustainability shape the world around them.
Super X Farm: Exploring Smart Agriculture

The visit to Super X Farm showcased how technology revolutionised agriculture, with drones being used to fertilise crops and water plants. Students gained insights into how innovative solutions can improve efficiency and address challenges in modern farming.
Haizhu Wetland Park: Connecting with Nature and Sustainability
Learning extended into the natural environment at Haizhu Wetland Park, where students explored the relationship between nature and land use. Observing different plant species and learning about wetland conservation deepened their appreciation of environmental sustainability. Students also put their navigation skills to the test using their self-made compasses, developing their observation, problem-solving and teamwork skills as they explored the park.
3. Communication and Collaboration: Building Bridges Through Shared Experiences
One of the highlights of the journey was the opportunity to connect with students from NanHai Foreign Language Senior High School through meaningful cultural exchange activities.

Whether engaging in wood-painting activities or making dumplings together, students shared their cultures and experiences while learning from one another. These hands-on activities encouraged communication, collaboration and mutual understanding.
